Every year since 1995, ISSB has produced or co-produced the Annual Northern California Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Conferences. The first four were co-produced by Yolo County Mental Health and UCD Rape Prevention Center. In 1999 CPPA began to co-produce all of our conferences. These conferences have been held in Yolo County every year from 1995 to present, usually in Davis. All of the conferences described below were offered at no cost and no registration. NATIONAL SCANDAL: Family Courts Placing Children with Identified Sex Abusers

Keynote speaker Dr. Linda Barnard is a licensed Marriage Family Therapist, in private practice in Sacramento since 1981. Dr. Barnard has also served as a trainer and consultant to various domestic violence programs in northern California since 1982
Other professionals at the conference were Geraldine Stahly, PhD, who presented research findings, and Kathleen Russell, legislative director of the Center for Judicial Excellence, who presented and discussed Garland Waller's documentary: No Way Out But One.
Journalist Jane Stevens discussed the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) studies by Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control. The ACE studies show that child sexual abuse as well as other types of traumatic childhood events prevent healthy development and have become a public health emergency.
The 2013 ISSB Conference was offered at no-cost and no-registration so that all who care to could attend free of charge.
Professionals could choose to register if they want to earn up to 6 CEUs for the full day. Linda Barnard, PhD, is approved to offer continuing education to marriage & family therapists and social workers by the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences, PCE#4159.

Healing the Sexually Abused Heart

What does recovery, healing, and transformation look like, sound like, and feel like? Dr. Romo shared his journey from childhood sexual abuse to crash landing and profound transformation. He shared maps and guiding resources for our healing journeys, knowing that the map is not the territory. In this presentation, participants voluntarily explored the power of their own responses to foundational questions: “Who am I? What do I want? What is my purpose?” Finally, participants heard from extraordinary victims turned survivor and thriver about what helped them in their journeys and what they have found to be their purposes. We were inspired and challenged to find and be the solutions we have been searching for.

Trauma Model Therapy for Child Sexual Abuse

As always, the 2011 ISSB Conference was offered at no-cost and no-registration,

NorCal Services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing provided Sign Language interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing, so that members of the Deaf Community were able to attend.
Dr. Ross presented his inspired techniques used successfully in his programs for patients with dual-diagnosis
and comorbidities. Trauma and sexual abuse survivors often suffer from depression, anxiety, dissociation, somatization,
borderline personality, amnesias, self injury, substance abuse, eating disorders, and more. Dr. Ross’s methods are tested
and effective across the board for all of these conditions.

Robin Sax is a former LA prosecutor who specialized in prosecuting child sex abuse cases. She is the author of six books, and is a commentator for national television and the Justice Interrupted radio show. http://www.robinsax.com
2. Yolo County District Attorney's Office panel
How child sex abuse cases should be handled. The Yolo County District Attorney's Office panel will present information on their excellent procedure for interviewing children who report sex abuse, and their successful process for prosecuting these crimes.
3. California town Hall Meeting
How child sex abuse cases are handled in California family courts. Non-abusive parents will describe civil and human rights violations that happened to them, and panelists will offer suggestions for remedies.
The family courts and criminal courts receive identical reports or child sexual abuse, but the family court handles them much differently. Testimony from parentys who attmpted to protect their children who reported incest will be heard by a panel of experts, including Jean Jorden from the CA District Attorneys Association, Nina Salarno from Crime Victims United, Robin Sax, and Kathleen Russel from the Center for Judicial Excellence.

What is ritual abuse? How does it happen? What is the evidence? How do survivors heal?
Ritual Abuse in the 21st Century, edited by clinical psychologist Randy Noblitt Ph.D. and Pamela Perskin Noblitt, is a sweeping overview of the subject of ritual abuse by an international, multi-disciplinary team of writers, researchers, therapists and survivors.
Dr. Noblitt discussed the evidence of ritual abuse, international research data from over 1,500 survivors, efforts to discredit allegations made by survivors, and the psychological, behavioral and physical devastation left by such abuse.

Keynote Speakers:
Jessica Hendra, actress and author ("Dejar" in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) discussed her books & exposure of her own family's secrets. Jessica Hendra spent three decades protecting the family secret. In 2004 her comedian father Tony Hendra, former editor of the National Lampoon, published his memoir Father Joe: The Man Who Saved My Soul. Jessica read the memoir, found a glaring oversight in his confession, and made the wrenching decision to publicly confront him. She then wrote How to Cook Your Daughter, which exposed his sins against her as a child and led to a New York Times investigation that shocked the literary world.
Wanda Karriker, Ph.D. presented research on the occurrence and effects extreme, systematic abuse. Child sexual abuse is alarmingly common. It is reported by 30-40% of all US women. Wanda Karriker, PhD presented her international research study of approximately 1,500 extreme abuse survivors from 30 countries and the commonalities of their horrifying abuse experiences, including incest and child sex abuse.
Two films were viewed during lunchtime:
Stories of Survival: Domestic Violence and Child Custody from the The Sheila Wellstone Foundation, presented protective parents and Courageous Kids describing their histories of court-ordered abuse.
Family Court Crisis: Our Children at Risk is a documentary produced by the Center for Judicial Excellence in Marin County, CA. It describes the risks experienced by children and their protective parents when they request protection from domestic violence and child abuse in the context of custody and visitation disputes.
Author Carolyn Lehman received an award as the author of Strong At The Heart, a powerful book about and for teens and adults who have been sexually abused in childhood.

Are Incest Victims Safer Since the "Incest Exception" was Removed?
In 2005 Senate Bill 33 (Battin) removed the outrageous CA Penal Code Section that permitted convicted incest perpetrators to receive a lesser penalty than other sexual abuse perpetrators, and then be reunified with their families. Panel of Law Enforcement & Legislative Activists discussed how assistance to incest victims has changed since the passage of SB 33, and other positive effects of the passage of California SB 33in 2005.

TRAUMA AND RECOVERY

The conference was moderated by Laurie Jones, JD, MBA.
An award was presented to Yolo County Supervisor Lois Wolk for her role in developing a Mulit-Disciplinary Interview Center in Yolo County.
Keynote speaker Vincent Felitti MD from San Diego Kaiser Permanente gave a memorable talk which resulted in not one, but two standing ovations.
His subject was the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study. He and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted this study with the help of 17,421 adult Kaiser Health Plan members. The research found a strong, graded relationship between 8 categories of adverse childhood experiences and the leading causes of health risks and mortality in adulthood. The data was accurate to p=.001.
The study did not examine the age of onset, severity or chronology of the negative events, only whether the events had occurred in a child's life. The findings of the research were as follows:
The more categories of the following experiences a child endures:
1. recurrent physical abuse
2. recurrent emotional abuse
3. sexual abuse
4. living in a household where a person is a substance abuser
5. living in a household where a person has a mental illness
6. living in a household where there is a person who is in prison
7. living in a household where the mother is battered
8. losing a parent
...The more likely the adult is to have:
1. smoking
2. alcoholism
3. drug abuse
4. obesity
5. 50+ sexual partners
6. poor occupational performance
7. depression
8. suicide attempts
9. lung disease
10. heart disease
11. hepatitis
12. diabetes
For an example, a person with 4 categories of adverse childhood experiences is 1220% more likely to attempt suicide than a person with 0 categories. The study found that 2/3 of suicide attempts could be attributed to adverse childhood experiences.
A male who experiences 6 categories of adverse childhood experiences has a 4,600% increase in the likelihood of later using intravenous drugs.
The importance of this data cannot be overstated. It has widespread implications for public policy, health care, and treatment on all levels.

This difficult information was balance by a powerful, hopeful presentation on a photography book project by Carolyn Lehman. Her book will document the lives of incest survivors spanning many different ages and ethnicities who are engaged in the healing process. The photographs of these survivors were on display at the conference, as were the four Survivor Quilts. Quilt squares were designed by incest and ritual abuse survivors during the past 6 years, and have been beautifully quilted by local artists.
A well-attended dance and movement workshop by Patricia Ehnisz ADTR, MCAT was held by during lunch.
Legislative Coalition to Prevent Child Abuse director Melissa Knight-Fine gave an update on California laws designed to protect children, including mandatory suspected child abuse reporting laws for clergy, and training and standards for custody evaluators (CA Family Law Sections 3044, 3110.5 and 3118 can be found at www.leginfo.ca.gov).
The award-winning documentary Small Justice by Garland Waller was shown, followed by a presentation by California Protective Parents Association Executive Director Karen Anderson who described a chilling case history of a young boy who was placed with his identified rapist father by family and juvenile courts, despite consistent disclosures of sodomy by the child for 7 years, 3 positive MDIC interviews, and 7 substantiated child protective services reports.
The final panel consisted of 6 survivors who had experienced at least 6 of the categories of adverse childhood experiences. All were survivors of ritual abuse, which can be viewed as a specific form of clergy abuse. These survivors demonstrated that healing is possible even under the most adverse conditions, with effective trauma treatment. The conference ended with a beautiful duet by two local women.

Bud Wolf, immediate past president and chair of the committee for Public Awareness and Education regarding Child Abuse Prevention, Davis Rotary Club, opened the conference.
Judith Reisman, PhD, author fo Kinsey: Crimes and Consequences described the effects of Alfred Kinsey's fraudulent research on society and law.
Robert Geffner, PhD, author, judicial educator, and director of Family Violence and Sexual Assault Institute, San Diego, discussed legal issues in child sex abuse cases.
Professor Mia Whit, PhD, student Alanna Krause, and attorney Sheryl Patteson spoke on their experiences in family court law and the legal system.

Morning Survivor Panel
Four survivors of incest, ritual abuse, cult abuse, and child pornography told their stories of the abuse they suffered, and shared their experience, strength, hope and healing. After years of difficulties due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, all four are now highly functioning and gainfully employed, and a beacon of hope to all survivors who still suffer.
Afternoon Panel
Two protective parents discussed the effects of ritual abuse on their children, and the lack of protection afforded to them. Their names were not used, in order to protect the children from further abuse. Their message was: "Listen to your children, they might be talking about ritual abuse."
Paul Chrissy, Solano County Child Abuse Prevention Council made a presentation and took questions. He is a consultant to human services organizations, writer and trainer on child abuse issues. He is a past President of the California Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and co-chair of the Board of Directors of SurvivorShip, an organization that seeks to provide services to survivors of ritual abuse. He was nominated by his son as Contra Costa County's "Amazing Dad of the Year"
Jim Kitchens, a pastor at the Davis Community Church, talked about the seminars that he gives for pastors and other church leaders on the prevention of sexual misconduct in the church.
Kym H., a ritual abuse survivor, integrated multiple personality, mother of three, addictions counselor, and parenting instructor, spoke about family violence, post-traumatic stress, dissociation, and creativity and spirituality in the healing process.
There were question and answer sessions for both the morning and afternoon panels.
Andrea, the daughter of a concentration camp survivor, lead us in the closing song.

Paul Crissy and Amanda Stone spoke and presented a slide show on the connections between ritual abuse and the Nazi Holocaust.
Many survivors of ritual abuse report connections with the Nazi Holocaust, either through their own heritage, family members who survived that atrocity, or direct contact through abuse done by perpetrators who were trained by Nazis.

The panel then lead Focus Group Discussions, discussing concerns, needs and ideas about how we, as members of our communities, might act to prevent child sexual abuse and advocate for those who are still being sexually abused. The focus groups then shared their ideas with the larger group.

Lunchtime viewing of the video: True/Not True, a film about the biological basis of traumatic memory.
The Afternoon Survivor/Therapist Panel featured four adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and two local therapists, who told their stories, spoke about the physical aftermath of child sexual abuse. They also presented guidelines for healing, and answered questions from the audience.

Survivor Panel
Two Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse told their stories, and the successful prosecution of one of their perpetrators. A survivor of sexual abuse by a therapist discussed the successful agency response to that crime.
Agency Panel
Speakers from the Woodland Police Department, Yolo County Sheriff's Department, Office of the District Attorney, and Department of Social Services presented information on identifying and protecting abused children, and prosecuting offenders.
Treatment Resources Panel
Speakers from the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center, Progress Ranch, Families First, and Incest Survivors Anonymous, discussed community treatment resources for children and parents who have been traumatized by sexual crimes.

Morning Panel: four local therapists discussed the frequency of sexual abuse, signs and symptoms in children and adults, post traumatic stress disorder, treatment, and recovery.
Afternoon: Survivor Panel, presented by the Incest Survivors Speakers bureau
Keynote Speaker: Father Bernie Bush spoke about the spiritual aspects of healing from sadistic sexual and ritual abuse, and challenges that individuals and communities face coping with the memories of survivors and witnesses.
The conference closed with an open discussion of healing resources in our community, and ways to protect children who have endured sexual abuse.
